How Long Does Gonorrhea Discharge Last After Treatment?

  1. Gonorrhea is a leading sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacteria Neisseria Gonorrhoeae. It affects both men and women, causing pelvic pain, a burning sensation during urination, and unusual genital discharge.
  2. Common gonorrhea symptoms include pelvic pain, rectal pain, and a burning sensation when urinating. Women may also experience irregularities in their periods, including heavy menstrual bleeding and irregular period cycles. The most common symptom is an unusual genital discharge, which can vary in color.
  3. Gonorrhea is curable, usually with a single dose of Ceftriaxone and Azithromycin. However, symptoms can persist for several days after starting treatment.
  4. While symptoms like burning during urination, pelvic pain, and rectal pain typically resolve 2 to 3 days after starting treatment, genital discharge can persist up to a week or more.
  5. The persistence of genital discharge after treatment is attributed to the damage caused by the infection to the genital tract cells. As the body recovers and sheds damaged cells to make room for new ones, discharge can continue.
  6. If the discharge or other symptoms persist for longer than a week, it's crucial to contact your healthcare provider as this could indicate a more serious condition.
  7. It's important to refrain from sexual intercourse while symptoms persist to avoid spreading the infection to partners.
  8. For any health concerns or questions, always consult with a healthcare provider.
